Here is a heat sink assembly with built-in thermoelectric coolers (TECs) used to control the temperature of the top plate. These were used to precisely control the temperature of 40W laser diode modules in Spectra Physics J40 and J80 laser systems.
The top is a 3.5 x 4 x 0.5 inch tin plated copper heat spreader. This has mounting holes to fit a Spectra Physics FCBar pump laser module. It can be easily removed in order to make holes for other devices. These world work nicely with a Coherent FAP laser diode module.
Under the heat spreader is an array of 4 Laird CP14-127-045 TEC modules. These are 40x40mm and capable of pumping 50W or more of heat from the heat spreader to the heat sink below. The individual TECs are rated for operation at up to 12V with a current of up to 8A. These are sealed with silicone to prevent damage from condensation. The TECs are wired in 2 series pairs for operation from 24V. In testing here, these draw about 12.5A at 24V and the heat spreader quickly gets quite cold.
Below the TEC array is a (very) heavy copper heat sink. There is a 10K NTC thermistor mounted to it which can be used to monitor it's temperature.
This is all held together by an aluminum frame. The complete assembly measures 6 x 4.5 x 3.75 inches and weighs in at a bit over 7lb.
Note that TECs aren't magic, nor particularly efficient so there will be considerably more heat on the hot side (heatsink) than is being moved by the TEC array. You will need to add a reasonably powerful fan blowing through the heat sink to dissipate all of this heat.
